As the French philosopher Bruno Latour has noted, a significant obstacle to understanding climate change — in the geographical, geological, social, and political senses — is one of language, of translating huge and often abstract databases and events into a scale that humans can comprehend.
ECO-HAIKUS FOR MARQUEES is the work of Justin Brice Guariglia, a New York City based artist. Beginning in 2016, Guariglia began collaborating with the philosopher Timothy Morton to generate a series of eco-aphorisms, or “eco-haikus” as he calls them, that would help people to think ecologically. ECO-HAIKUS FOR MARQUEES brings together a compilation of these aphorisms, written by both Morton and Guariglia.
The haikus, often both playful and serious, function to expand our collective vocabulary, giving us important tools to better understand the great existential issues around climate change, global warming, and ecological collapse.
